Our
Story
Moonrise Shearing was started in 2016 by Gina Gouveia when she stumbled into the shearing world through her love of all things fiber and textiles. In 2019 her brother, David, joined the team turning Moonrise into a family run business. Since then, they have traveled across the United States with their two pups shearing all over the western states. In 2021 they purchased a home together in the San Luis Valley in Northern New Mexico with plenty of room to eventually have fiber animals of their own.

MEET THE TEAM
DAVID GOUVEIA
HEAD HOLDER/SHEARER
David was introduced to the shearing world through his older sister, Gina. He has 5 years of experience doing both sheep and alpacas. He began as the head holder for his first season but, quickly proved to be a natural and began shearing his second year and has now become the other primary shearer. He also has experience doing commercial shearing out in the Midwest for several seasons. Many call him the "animal whisperer" because animals seem to have a very calm demeanor around David!
GINA GOUVEIA
OWNER/SHEARER/SCHEDULER
Gina was first introduced to shearing through her passion for fiber arts. She processes her own fiber, enjoys natural dyes, hand spins, weaves, crochets and knits. She has 8 years of experience both managing and working with diverse, professional teams across the United States. She has worked both on commercial sheep shearing crews and doing small flocks/herds. She brings a deep understanding of fiber quality and animal husbandry to every job site. She's also competed in the Rapid City National Shearing Competition and has placed in the finals for her division each year she's competed!

FOLEY & SADIE
Foley is the newest addition to the Moonrise team. Just a little pup but he shows all the instinct and eagerness to work sheep. He'll be working sheep in no time, is the goal! Also in the truck is Sadie. Sadie was previously fired from her job working sheep, she would much rather sleep in a cozy truck all day than work. A good pair & they seem to balance each other out.
